Crane’s SmartStem Takes the Pressure for Japan Airlines

JAL to retrofit Boeing 737NG and 767 aircraft with SmartStem Wireless Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Crane Aerospace & Electronics, a segment of Crane Co. (NYSE:CR), is providing the SmartStem Wireless Tire Pressure Monitoring System for Japan Airlines’ fleet of Boeing 737NG and 767 aircraft. The system will allow Japan Airlines to check tire pressure quickly and accurately, improve dispatch times, enhance safety and provide the ability to trend tire life performance. Fifty Boeing 737s and 42 Boeing 767s will be retrofitted.

The SmartStem system consists of high-accuracy SmartStem tire pressure sensors, which replace the existing standard wheel fill stems, and a handheld reader, which electronically reads and stores tire pressure and temperature.

SmartStem is certified for retrofit on a number of large commercial and regional aircraft as well as many business aircraft. Commercial certifications include the Boeing 737NG, 747-400, 767, 777 and 787, and the Bombardier CRJ and DHC-8 aircraft.

Rick Jones, Senior Vice President, Sensing & Utility Systems for Crane
Japan Airlines is our launch customer for retrofitting a large commercial fleet with SmartStem. JAL’s maintenance team is very strong and well-respected, and they thoroughly evaluated SmartStem’s capability to generate cost savings from improved dispatch times before selecting us. That makes the selection all the more significant.
Rick Jones, Senior Vice President, Sensing & Utility Systems for Crane
We are looking forward to the reliability and convenience of using the handheld wireless reader. It is sure to save time for our maintenance crews, and improve efficiency of maintenance work related to tire pressure checks.
Yasuo Yoshida, Vice President of the aircraft maintenance division in Japan Airlines
