Fuel For Growth: Crane Aerospace & Electronics Breaks Ground on New Fuel Flow Test Facility
Crane Aerospace & Electronics, a segment of Crane Co. (NYSE:CR), hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on September 14 to celebrate the construction of a 12,000-square foot, state-of-the-art design and test facility in Lynnwood, Wash. Washington State Governor Jay Inslee was the keynote speaker at the event, which also included remarks from State Senator Marko Liias, Crane Aerospace & Electronics President Brendan Curran and Vice President of Fluid Management Solutions Jay Higgs.
The new facility is dedicated to the design and testing of mass fuel flowmeters. Flowmeters measure an aircraft engine’s fuel flow rate in flight, allowing pilots and ground crews to know exactly how much fuel has been used. Crane’s flowmeters measure fuel flow by mass instead of volume for unmatched accuracy. This building has been specially designed to test fuel flowmeters under extreme operating conditions to meet and exceed requirements for the next generation of fuel-efficient jet engines. Once complete, it will be one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in the world, underlining Crane’s commitment to technological innovation.
This expansion will enable Crane to meet increased development and testing requirements stemming from several recent program wins on growth platforms for new fuel-efficient jet engines. These advanced engines power the locally-built Boeing 737 MAX and the Airbus A320neo, among other large commercial and regional jet aircraft. The new facility supports the growth of Crane’s Fuel Flow product team to approximately 60 skilled workers as these new engines enter service.
Local government support for the expansion has been strong, with multiple elected officials joining the celebration. Those present included Washington State Senator Marko Liias, D- Lynnwood; Brian Bonlender, Director, Washington State Department of Commerce; Jacqui Trillo, from the Office of U.S. Representative Rick Larsen; Dave Somers, Chair, Snohomish County Council; Terry Ryan, Vice-Chair, Snohomish County Council; Sean Connell, Director of Economic Development, Snohomish County; Allison Clark, Managing Director, Business Services, Washington State Department of Commerce; Nicola Smith, Mayor, City of Lynnwood; and David Kleitch, Director of Economic Development, City of Lynnwood.
The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2016.
It was ten years ago that I was here as a Congressman touring this site, and it’s a delight to be back again - this time as governor - celebrating expansion at this facility and another successful product line from Crane. Our state is leading the world in aerospace innovations, from next-generation airplanes like Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner and the Mitsubishi Regional Jet to Crane’s new fuel flow transmitters. We can be proud of Washington’s vast constellation of aerospace companies. With more than 1,350 businesses employing over 132,500 people in every corner of the state, our aerospace industry is entering its second century stronger than ever.

With the addition of this facility, we will be able to double our production volume of fuel flow transmitters over the next five years. This gives us the capacity to meet our customers’ demand as they introduce a new generation of engines for Boeing, Airbus and other aircraft manufacturers. The decision to build the facility here in Lynnwood was an obvious one – especially when you look at the outstanding performance, quality and dedication of the nearly 800 employees at the site.
